* On July 1, 2004, 12 percent of all Americans were age 65 and over (this represents 36.3 million people).

* By the year 2050, people 65 and over in the U.S. is projected to reach 21 percent (representing 86.7 million people).

* The U.S. population of people age 65 and over is expected to expand 147% between the years 2000 and 2050 (as compared to expected total population growth of 49%).
