Southern California Earthquake Information and Resources
Southern California has a long history of earthquakes. There was the famous Long Beach earthquake of 1933. There is a chart of "significant" earthquakes dating back to the late 1700's here. In the 1930's, the Richter Scale measuring earthquake magnitude was developed. It is still used today. The American Red Cross has information about safety in the home, and general disaster preparedness. Plus, there is special preparedness information for seniors. Read about emergency preparedness pets and animals. And, learn more about being prepared for people with disabilities and medical concerns.
The Southern California Earthquake Center, funded by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Geological Survey, has good, technical information.
In addition, Earthquake Country,
a service of The Southern California Earthquake Center, has good information on what to do
before, during and after an earthquake. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has a special website for kids, including a special section on earthquakes. The FEMA website includes a document titled "Earthquake Preparedness: What Every Childcare Provider Should Know" that can be downloaded. A majority of California earthquake homeowner's insurance policies for residential properties are issued by the California Earthquake Authority (CEA), a privately-funded entity. You can read about earthquake insurance and coverage, including coverage for mobilehomes and condominiums. There also is earthquake insurance offered that covers renters or tenants.
